금광과 은광이 점점이 이어져 있는 이 두 지역은 험준한 중부 고원의 동쪽 경사면으로부터 뻗어 내려 모스키토 해안의 석호와 습지들에 이릅니다. 그 사이에 열대 우림, 소나무와 야자나무의 사바나들이 있는데다, 수많은 강과 천들이 카리브 해로 제각기 꾸불꾸불 흘러 들어가 변화무쌍한 경치가 전개됩니다. 오랜 세월에 걸쳐, 메스티소족은 물론 미스키토족과 같은 토착민들의 마을과 읍, 작은 도시들이 그 지역에 형성되어 왔습니다.
이 지역의 미스키토족·수모족·라마족·크레올족 주민들 대다수에게는 수도 마나과가 딴 세상처럼 보입니다. 실로 아직 동과 서를 잇는 포장도로조차 없습니다. 대서양 지역에서 스페인어를 사용하기는 하지만, 많은 사람들은 미스키토어나 크레올어, 또는 다른 토착어들을 사용합니다. 그리고 주민 대부분이 프로테스탄트교, 일반적으로 모라비아교를 신봉하여, 가톨릭이 지배적인 태평양 지역과는 대조를 이룹니다. 이처럼 거의 모든 면에서?지리적으로, 언어적으로, 역사적으로, 문화적으로, 종교적으로?동과 서는 뚜렷한 대조를 이룹니다.
In 1987 the government created two autonomous regions that form the eastern part of Nicaragua. Previously known as Zelaya, they are now called the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN in Spanish) and the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAS). Although these regions represent about 45 percent of Nicaragua’s land area, they are home to only about 10 percent of the population.
Dotted with gold and silver mines, the RAAN and RAAS extend from the eastern slopes of the rugged central highlands to the lagoons and marshes of the Mosquito Coast. In between lies a variegated landscape of tropical rain forest, pine and palm savannas, and numerous rivers and streams that snake their way down to the Caribbean. Over the years, villages, towns, and small cities populated by mestizos, as well as Miskito and other indigenous peoples, have been established there.
To the majority of Miskito, Sumo, Rama, and Creole inhabitants of this region, the capital city, Managua, seems like another world. Indeed, there is still no paved road linking the east with the west. Although Spanish is spoken in the Atlantic region, many people speak Miskito, Creole, or some other indigenous tongue. And most profess to be Protestant, generally Moravian, in contrast with those in the predominantly Catholic Pacific region. So in almost every way?geographically, linguistically, historically, culturally, and religiously?east and west stand in sharp contrast.
