아루바 섬과 보네르 섬과 쿠라사우 섬. 베네수엘라 해안에서 조금 떨어진 곳에 자리 잡고 있는 이 세 개의 섬은 독특한 아름다움을 지니고 있습니다. 카리브 해의 다른 섬들과 같은 녹음이 우거진 아름다움이 아니라, 사막과 밤마다 드리워지는 신비로운 그림자와 낮이면 눈부신 대조를 이루는 색채의 아름다움입니다.
이곳에서는 강우량이 적어서 무성하게 자란 거대한 선인장의 모습이 어디에서나 눈에 띄며, 그 중 가장 빼어난 종류는 카두시입니다. 디비디비나무도 이곳에서 잘 자라는데, 이 나무는 꼭대기 부분이 한쪽으로 기울어진 특이한 모양을 하고 있어 쉽게 알아볼 수 있습니다. 마치 묵묵히 서 있는 보초처럼, 재식 농장 건물들이 푸른 하늘을 배경으로 검은 윤곽을 드러내고 우뚝 서서 지나간 식민지 시대를 생각나게 해 줍니다. 그리고 염소들이 시골 지역을 여기저기 돌아다니며 껑충껑충 뛰어 길을 건넙니다.
아루바 섬과 보네르 섬에서는 관광 산업이 활기를 띠고 있지만, 쿠라사우 섬은 정유업과 근해 조업으로 생기는 수입에 의존하고 있습니다. 각 섬에서 볼 수 있는 공통적인 특징 하나는 담수화 시설이며, 이 시설은 바닷물을 증류하여 식수를 위한 물과 전력을 위한 증기를 공급해 줍니다.
현재 전체 인구가 거의 25만 명이 되는 이 섬들은 15세기에 스페인 사람들이 발견하였습니다. 그 후에 네덜란드인들이 이 섬들을 점령하였고, 잠깐씩 프랑스인들과 영국인들의 손에 넘어갔다가 1815년에 이 섬들은 다시 네덜란드인들의 소유가 되었습니다. 1954년 이래, 원래 이 세 개의 섬과 리워드 제도의 세 섬으로 이루어져 있던 네덜란드령 앤틸리스 제도는 국내 문제에서 자치권을 행사해 왔습니다. 하지만 1986년에, 아루바는 스타투스 아파르테 즉 분리된 지위를 인정받았습니다.
The islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao are known as the ABC islands. Lying off the coast of Venezuela, they have a beauty of their own. Theirs is, not the lush beauty of other Caribbean islands, but the beauty of the desert, of mysterious shadows at night, and of stark, contrasting colors by day.
Because of low rainfall, giant cactuses?the pride of which is the kadushi?grow profusely, dominating the landscape. The divi-divi tree, distinguished by its peculiar lopsided crown, also flourishes. Like silent sentinels, plantation houses stand silhouetted against azure skies, reminders of the colonial past. Goats roam the countryside and scamper across the roads.
Aruba and Bonaire boast a vibrant tourist industry, while Curacao depends on income generated by oil refining and offshore business. A feature of each island is a desalination plant, which distills seawater, providing both water for drinking and steam for electricity.
The islands, which now have a population of just under 250,000, were discovered in the 15th century by the Spaniards. Later, the Dutch took possession, and though the islands were in the hands of the French and the English for brief periods, they reverted to the Dutch in 1815. Since 1954, the federation of the Netherlands Antilles, originally consisting of the ABC islands and three of the Leeward Islands, has been self-governing in internal affairs. In 1986, though, Aruba was granted status aparte, or separate status.
