고대 그리스의 환경을 고려해 보자. 신화에 나오는, 그리스 사람들의 몇몇 신들에 관한 색정적인 이야기, 플라톤과 같은 철학자들의 저술 그리고 젊은이들이 경기장에서 벌거벗고 경기하는 관습에 자극을 받아 그리스어권 세계의 엘리트 계층에서 동성애가 크게 유행하게 되었다. 「고대 그리스에서의 사랑」(Love in Ancient Greece)이라는 책에 따르면, “크레타에서는 가문이 좋은 소년에게 [남자] 애인이 없으면 부끄러운 일로 간주되었다.” 밝혀지지 않은 유전자나 호르몬이 그러한 타락을 초래한 것은 결코 아니다. 그리스의 생활 양식이 그것을 용인하였기 때문에, 사실상 조장하였기 때문에 동성애가 만연하였던 것이다! 이것은 환경이 얼마나 강력한 요인으로 작용할 수 있는지 잘 예시해 준다.
동성애를 선전하는 활동이 쇄도한 결과, 오늘날 그러한 견해가 널리 퍼졌다는 데는 의문의 여지가 없다. TV, 영화, 음악 및 잡지에는 동성애에 대한 암시가 빈번하게 나온다. 유선 텔레비전 때문에 일부 청소년들은 노골적인 외설물을 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 남녀를 구별할 수 없는 (유니섹스) 옷차림이나 치장은 세련된 스타일이 되었다. 어떤 전문가들은 일부 여성 해방론자들에 의해 촉진된 반(反)남성 선전 운동 역시 여성 동성애의 증가에 일조를 하였다고 생각한다. 청소년들은 동성애 생활 방식을 공공연하게 옹호하는 급우들과의 교제를 통해서도 나쁜 영향에 노출될 수 있다.
Consider the environment of ancient Greece. Spurred on by the erotic stories about some of their mythological gods, the writings of philosophers such as Plato, and the culture of the gymnasium where youths performed unclad, homosexuality became the rage among the elite in the Greek-speaking world. No doubt the flood of pro-homosexual propaganda has done much to spread that viewpoint today. Allusions to homosexuality abound in TV, movies, music, and magazines. Cable television has given some youths easy access to hard-core pornography. Androgynous (unisex) styles of dress and grooming have become chic. Some experts also feel the antimale propaganda promoted by some feminists has contributed to the rise of lesbianism. Youths may also receive exposure to bad influences by association with classmates who openly advocate the homosexual life-style.
